Our Perfect Pork

Our new venture in 2009 was into pork production.  We started with Dizzy, a 2 year old black pedigree Saddleback X Berkshire sow, and Ginny a 1 year old pedigree pure Tamworth sow.  Dizzy came to us in pig to a Tamworth boar, and a few months later, in a blizzard in February, gave us a beautiful litter of 11 piglets. 

We've been incredibly lucky as the girls and their babies have been a joy to look after.  They're brilliant to watch and Grampa Jock had a fine time throwing apples and cabbages for them to chase.  At some point we've all stood and watched them for hours as they we so amusing - especially when finding interesting things to scratch against like the foundations of the chicken shed!

Our first litter grew swiftly and happily with our first pork being ready in September.

Autumns litters from both sows to a Tamworth X Wild Boar boar gave us 18 piglets which will be ready in the spring.  Despite our worries about the litters mixing they've once again proved to be very easy and the sows have happily taken their turn in rearing the others piglets as if they were their own.
